Bookcases

A: A bookcase can be called a closed unit that encases books and is designed to sit on the floor whereas a bookshelf doesn't have ecased ends and is often designed to hang on the wall. Bookcases are more traditional compared to bookshelves and are often installed as permanent fixtures in a house.

A: It's not always cheaper to build a bookshelf than to buy one, as the final cost depends on factors like your existing tools, skill level, the materials you use, and whether you're comparing it to cheap, mass-produced furniture or a custom, high-end piece. While DIY can be more cost-effective for high-quality, custom designs, buying a simple, mass-produced bookshelf is often cheaper and requires less time and effort.

A: Hardwoods like oak and maple offer excellent strength and longevity. Plywood, especially in thicker grades, can provide sufficient strength for most bookshelf applications. Avoid softwoods like pine for load-bearing shelves, as they tend to sag under weight.

A: Not using the right tools: Using the wrong tools can lead to mistakes and a less-than-perfect finished product. Not securing shelves properly: Properly securing each shelf is important for safety and stability.

A: A minimum of 1" thickness should be used for the solid shelving material. My personal design preferences based on the scale of the units that were provided would be to use 3/4" plywood material with a fold over edge to give a 1-1/2" shelf apron.
